Handling of Lithium Battery Safety Accidents

The internal structure of a lithium-ion battery:
Lithium (lithium-ion) batteries consist of four main components:

The main function of the cathode is to determine the voltage and capacity of the battery. The cathode is a multimetal combination of manganese, cobalt, and nickel. The chemical reaction of the lithium battery takes place here. The anode is similar to the cathode in that there are also active reactions in the anode. The function of the anode is to allow the flow of electricity through the electrons. The electrolyte allows lithium ions to move between the cathode and anode during charge and discharge. Electrons, on the other hand, move through a metal sheet or wire. This movement allows the battery to work efficiently. The separator keeps the battery safe by acting as a barrier between the cathode and anode.

The effective and efficient function of a lithium battery depends on the direction of movement of the lithium ions. When charging, ions move from the cathode to the anode. The opposite is true when the power is disconnected. Unstable lithium is great at storing energy. Due to the volatility of lithium, lithium ions in the battery are released slowly and gradually. However, if there is an accident that results in a one-shot release, an explosion may occur. These mainly occur when the diaphragm fails and the anode and cathode come into contact.

Between the electrodes there is an electrolyte layer. Each electrode is coated with its substance; one is a lithium coating, while the other is an oxygen-containing compound. Both substances are highly reactive. In a healthy battery, lithium ions are free to move. The ions react with oxygen, creating a continuous flow of ions. This creates an equilibrium when the lithium electrode becomes the negative electrode and the oxygen electrode becomes the positive electrode. However, in a perforated cell, there is no free and continuous flow of ions, creating an imbalance. Shorting the electrodes will cause the battery to explode.

How to minimize the risk of lithium battery explosion? Taking good care of your lithium-ion battery is important. Handle with care and do not expose it to volatile conditions, especially high temperatures. Also, check to make sure its internal composition has not been compromised.
